In a market worth over £30bn, the last decade has seen rapid changes in the travel industry.  With rising levels of disposable income, and a generally confident consumer market, the proportion of people taking a holiday has increased by 3 percentage points between 2000 and 2005 to 65%, whilst the number of those also taking multiple holidays has increased.  

Technological changes have changed the face of the travel industry irreversibly.  Mintel estimates that there were 7.9 million domestic holidays and almost 16.4 million overseas holidays or components booked on the Internet in 2005. Thus the Internet accounts for almost 20% of domestic and over 37% of foreign bookings.   There has been a big increase in ‘dynamic packaging’ or ‘tailor-made’ holidays in 2005 and this is set to increase further in the future as dynamic packaging software technologies are enabling travel sites to offer a more flexible holiday product
